1. What is: Raising Capital
This simply means attracting funds to finance or grow your business. There are several ways to do this, such as issuing shares (equity) or borrowing money (debt). “Raising capital” is the umbrella term for all the different methods companies use to secure financing.
2. What is: Equity
With equity financing, you sell a portion of your company to investors in exchange for funds. The investor receives a percentage of shares (ownership) in the business.
Advantages:
- No mandatory repayments or interest.
- Investors may bring valuable knowledge and networks.
Disadvantages:
- You give up a share of your company’s control and profits.
- Investors often want influence over important decisions.
3. What is: Debt
Debt financing means borrowing money (for example, through a bank loan, bond, or convertible loan) that you must repay with interest. The investor does not receive ownership in the company, but does have the right to repayment.
Advantages:
- You retain 100% ownership and control.
- Once the loan is repaid, your obligation to the lender ends.
Disadvantages:
- You must make repayments with interest, regardless of your profit.
- Debt can put pressure on your cash flow, especially if your business is not yet profitable.
